Parks are synonymous with romance, and offer much variety in terms of scenery. In addition to being tranquil, away from the urban sprawl, parks are great for an engagement shoot! Here in San Diego, our parks have beautiful features such as historical buildings, monuments and fountains. Here is a selection of our San Diego park recommendations.

Balboa Park

This massive park is the pride of San Diego. It is world-renowned for its abundant and exotic plant life, along with its marvelous museums and architecture. With so much variety within reach, each and every photo shoot is completely unique. If you have a few favorite spots in the park, or a particular vibe you are going, for its important to let your photographer know. That way we can plan logistically, as the park is huge!

Presidio Park

This park, in the heart of Mission Hills, is a hidden gem. It has nice open green space, and plentiful trees, which makes you feel like you are in a forest. It also has the Junípero Serra Museum, which provides nice backgrounds, and adds variety to your shoot.

Liberty Station

This historic naval base has become a popular gathering point for San Diegans. Many local businesses have set up shop in Liberty Station, which is in the heart of Point Loma. With a plethora of beautiful courtyards, amazing architecture, and green open spaces, Liberty Station is ideal for an engagement photo shoot.

Waterfront Park

Right on the edge of Downtown San Diego, on the grounds of the County Administration Building, lies Waterfront Park. This park is distinct, as it offers views of downtown, as well as the San Diego Bay. Running throughout the park are awesome fountains, as well as cultivated plant areas. The administration building itself provides nice backdrops, and there is also a gigantic play structure, which will bring out the kid in you!

Do you have any tips for an engaged couple before taking engagement photos?

An engagement shoot is the best way to really build a comfort with your wedding photographer before the wedding day. You get to see how they direct you and how comfortable it feels. As well, it is a great way for us to discover how the two of you interact as a couple, and what type of images you connect with. To make the most of your session time, we suggest choosing a location that has lots of great environments to work with.

Sometimes it can be fun to think of something you like to do together as a couple and create more of a scene for your engagement shoot. Having fun within your environment can really reflect your personality as a couple, and show off the love you have together :) We have a lot of great locations if you are wanting some inspiration.

We suggest keeping the engagement shoot short and sweet. More time on an engagement doesn't make it a better shoot. It's actually better to shoot for less time and be more efficient. We find that after an hour and a half, couples tend to look tired, and you see that in the photographs. We use the time well, and can produce amazing results from a shoot that lasts an hour or so.

As for attire, we suggest that you bring two changes of clothes. The first outfit can be a little more dressy, and the second can be a bit more casual. The key is to NOT match. Matching is not cool. Dress like you are going out on a date together. One suggested outfit is a dress and heels for the bride to be, and denim jeans and a nice collared shirt for the guy. The second outfit could be the bride wearing blue jeans, and the groom just changing his shirt to a favorite tee or something more comfortable. If you plan on incorporating outfit changes, you'll want to ensure you have booked sufficient photo shoot time. For example, typically 1 hour=1 outfit, 1.5 hours=up to 2 outfits, etc.

All of your engagement pictures are guaranteed to be ready within 14 business days. If you are using the photos for save the dates, or need them sooner, we should be able to turn them around quicker for you. All of the engagement images are provided full-resolution, to be displayed or printed as you wish.

No need to be tame at the San Diego Zoo

Cari and Aaron wanted to do something a little bit unique, while still staying true to their personalities. Because Cari works at the San Diego Zoo, and Aaron recently moved to town from Arizona, the Zoo seemed like a perfect San Diego landmark for this fun couple’s engagement shoot!

We had a blast roaming around the park, and Cari and Aaron were like kids on a playground. The lighthearted shoot was centered around the two of them getting comfortable, hanging out, and laughing like they normally would. There were secluded areas of the zoo where it seemed as if they were alone in the jungle, and other spots that were more sociable – including a moment where they hoola-hooped alongside 20 children in front of a live band! From a silly pose in the photo booth, to a romantic ride on the Skyfari tram, the shoot was a perfect balance of sweet moments.
