Should I Have A Wedding Shot List?

By, August 24, 2017

From our perspective, there are a few scenarios where a short list is helpful, such as a list of family pictures. As well, if there is a shot you have been dreaming about, we definitely want to know. But typically, we find we can be more fun and creative for you by getting to know you, as opposed to going straight down a list. By talking together, starting early in the booking process, we are able to learn much more about you. We find out what is important to you, and how you interact as a couple. By preparing in advance, and then letting the day happen naturally, we can capture the most genuine and spontaneous moments.

Lists and Pinterest boards can be a great way to describe your sense of style in a few photos. But they can also be constricting. Giving artistic freedom allows your photographer to create images that are personal and original to your special day!

If there are special details, important family, and surprise events, these are examples of things to talk over in advance with your photographer! Not necessarily as a shot list, but as a heads up, so the details can be worked out. That way, we can reserve time to capture things creatively.
Funny Bride and Groom during First Look
On Synthia and Yupeng's wedding day at Estancia (above), the couple wanted to have a moment together before the ceremony with a First Look. For a bigger surprise, we asked Synthia to strike a funny pose before Yupeng turned around. Because we got to know each other, we knew Synthia would be on board :)

By avoiding memorized lists of poses, your photographer will be able to focus more on the magic of the moment, as well as candid expressions, and the best artistic angles.

Fun Bride and Groom showing off Shoes
On Owen Brenna and George's wedding day at the Andaz Hotel, we arrived early to find this amazing modern bath in Owen Brenna's room. After draining and waterproofing everything, we had her hop in for a fun photo. The moment was totally unscripted, and totally awesome!

As the sun set during Nicole and Brandon's wedding at Scripps Seaside Forum, we took the couple out to some rocks we scouted earlier in the day. After waiting for the perfect moment, and illuminating the couple with off-camera flash, we were able to create an effect that stretched far beyond the couple's expectations.

Rather than an abundance of visual examples, or an extensive list with shots to cross off, know that you have hired a great team to take care of you. We will bring out your personalities in a creative and flattering ways!

If you do have a list, like for must-have family shots, it is most important that the people included know they are taking part. They will need to know where to be, and be ready to go at the right time. To achieve this, it is helpful to dedicate a family member to gather people, especially when dealing with larger groups. Having everyone aware and present will set you up for success.

Getting Emotional About Candid Wedding Photography

By, July 20, 2017

At the risk of sounding sentimental, we love candids! When subjects don’t know they’re being photographed, we are able to capture fleeting glances, unabashed joy, and pure heartfelt emotion. Whether it’s a reaction during a First Look, or a smile during a particularly bawdy toast, we enjoy documenting those magical moments that make your wedding so uniquely yours.

We photograph candids all throughout the wedding day, to show glimpses of the ‘true’ feelings of the occasion. The resulting candids often wind up being among the most treasured photos :) Here are a few of our recent favorite candid wedding photos showcasing the big day!

We spend a lot of time getting to know our clients' personalities before the big day. During Christina and Matty's wedding (above) at Santiago Canyon Estate, a groomsmen may have shared a bit too much when it was his turn on the mic. Focusing on the Christina and Matty, we were able to capture their priceless reactions!

At Katherine and Will's wedding reception, we wanted to showcase the excitement of the moment as guests got together for a celebratory shot. We stood on a nearby chair to capture this photo :)

Variety: The Spice of Life

By, June 30, 2017

As photographers, we love adding a healthy dose of variety into the wedding day images. By incorporating a mixture of poses and diverse locations, we’re able to craft photos that are both original and personal. Even when we know a location by heart, we always arrive early, to ensure a wide range of photos will be captured. We explore the area, check out the day’s conditions, and find the best creative angles.

We like to scout locations that offer a wide array of creative possibility, and keep an eye out for subtle changes in light and landscape.

While scouting for Angela and Donnie's wedding at Mt. Woodson, we spotted that the pomegranate trees were in season, and were bearing fruit. For a more intimate portrait, we asked the couple to stand between the leaves, and lean in for a kiss. We framed the foliage around them, and added a romantic bokeh effect, which created a dreamy look.

We're also aware of the subtle, candid moments throughout the day. It's in these fleeting moments where the subject isn't looking that some of the most treasured moments unfold.

On Xochi and William's wedding day, we noticed this sweet moment of William taking a second to help tie his son's shoes. By staying alert, we were able to document the priceless moment between a father and his son.

In addition to using the environment as a prop, we like to make use of creative lighting, and photograph scenes in unexpected ways. As the rain began to drizzle during Natalie and Joel's New Year's Eve wedding at the Ultimate Skybox, we placed a light behind them for a dramatic effect. By playing with off-camera lighting, we were able to transform the scene, and enhance the moment.
