The new prayers of the Mass have become a central focus at our Sunday liturgies. The new language is more formal to help instill a more formal atmosphere in the Mass, language precedes behavior. There is another change that was infused into the liturgy but has not had the same emphasis as the language, silence. Our world, our daily lives have become increasingly invaded by noise. A complete dissertation could be done on the destructive affects of noise in our daily lives. Most profoundly, noise is a distraction to our soul’s ability to hear the voice of God.
In the book of 1 Kings, Elijah was directed to go to Horeb where he would hear God pass by. Standing outside of his cave a strong heavy wind went by – but the Lord was not in the wind. There was an earthquake – but the Lord was not in the earthquake. There was a fire – but the Lord was not in the fire. There came a tiny whispering sound and Elijah hid his face in his cloak hearing the voice of God. It is in silence that we hear God’s voice.
Silence is key for us to hear the voice of God especially at Mass on Sundays. There is a need to silence our minds, our heart and our voices as we come to Mass. We listen to the readings and spend more time in silent reflection after each reading. Silent reflection after communion is essential for us to more deeply express our gratitude. We should also restraint from immediate conversation with others as we process out of Mass reflectively having been sent to give glory to the Lord by our lives.
