Balboa Park, a beloved San Diego institution, is one of the nation’s oldest public parks. We love photographing engagement shoots there because everything is within walking distance. This means we are able to accomplish more pictures and greater variety within a shorter time period. We’ve been photographing in Balboa Park for years and know every nook and cranny that it has to offer. A Balboa Park engagement photo shoot always results in a nice mix of timeless shots and fun images.

Many of us are long time (or lifelong) San Diegans, and nothing says San Diego quite like Balboa Park. Some of our favorite landmarks to incorporate into engagement photo shoots are the stately Museum of Man entrance, the tranquil koi pond, and the classic organ pavilion. There is natural beauty all around too, with many diverse locations in walking distance. We even have our own secret spots to photograph :) For all of these reasons, Balboa Park is an ideal outdoor photo shoot location.

Los Peñasquitos Canyon Engagement Shoot

A unique aspect of living in San Diego is that we have a variety of landscapes in a relatively short distance. From beaches, to mountains, to deserts, to urban settings, we have direct access to it all! The same goes for engagement shoot locations, like this special spot in the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. Nestled between Rancho Peñasquitos and Mira Mesa, the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve can be found near the Interstate 5 and 805 merge. The Canyon boasts a slew of amazing natural landscapes, including a waterfall, winding trails, grassy hillsides and majestic sycamore trees. For a beautiful juxtaposition between natural open space and contemporary urban, we like to walk over to the architecturally stunning Syntricity, Inc building. Having so many backgrounds within close proximity gives a lot of variety to the images, and makes for a fun photo session.

Cedros Avenue Design District Engagement Shoot

For couples looking for a little bit of everything in their engagement photo shoot, we highly recommend Cedros Avenue in Solana Beach. Also referred to as the Cedros Design District, this street is a dream photo shoot location. A quick stroll down the sidewalk will take you by an assortment of boutiques, quirky sculptures, beautiful galleries, and fine jewelry shops. While you’re in the area, you can also enjoy a chic cafe, a local brewery, an urban winery, or the infamous Belly Up Tavern, all of which are within walking distance. There’s even a pop-up Farmers Market on Sundays.

Because Cedros Avenue runs parallel to Highway 101 along the coast, the beach is just steps away! If you want to walk along the sand, share a romantic moment, or splash in the waves, the beach at Fletcher Cove is a perfect spot. And there are lots of other natural settings nearby, such as a hidden grassy field, which is a great place to relax and unwind.
