When The Sun Goes Down | Night Wedding Photos

By, April 06, 2016

As creative and technical photographers, we love being presented with challenging lighting scenarios. For example, under certain conditions, outdoor night images can be especially tricky to pull off. However, if done right, the results are unique and stylish. If you love the nighttime look as much as we do, we suggest having an extra fifteen minutes or so in your timeline, so we can sneak you away for these special shots.

Below, you will find a selection of our favorite recent night wedding photos. We hope you find inspiration in them for your own nighttime wedding. Enjoy!

One of our favorite times of day, from a lighting perspective, is just after the sun sets. Around 20-45 minutes after the sun dips below the horizon, the sky creates a light show, especially along San Diego’s fine coastline.

Many venues have evening lights that emphasize their architecture, such as the Fairmont Grand Del Mar, below.

The image below was captured with the shutter open extra long, which created a sunburst effect from the market lights.

For a fun and unique evening photo location, you can’t beat Rodeo Drive, in the middle of the street :)  To achieve this look, we lit Kelly and Julio from behind, allowing them to be the highlight of the photo.

Here, we flooded a corner of the ballroom with light from our flash, while also capturing the flickering lights from the city below.

Sometimes, wedding ceremonies take place at night, which creates an intimate and tranquil atmosphere.

Many venues have archways made entirely out of vines and plants. During the day, they are beautiful in their own way. At night, the lights inside the foliage create a perfect environment for portraits.

In the photo below, our flash added an extra highlight to the veil. This created more dramatic contrast between the couple, the veil, and the lights on the architecture behind them.

Purple sky photos are only possible at night, such as this one with the Hotel Del in the background.

Let’s not forget the farewell portrait at the end of the night, like the one below, where sparklers helped to create a vibrant and timeless image.

Modern Chaldean Wedding | Amelia & Alvin

By, March 02, 2016

Amelia and Alvin were married at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar, a luxurious Mediterranean-style estate located just north of San Diego. They are both of Chaldean heritage, and wanted their wedding to be a celebration of their shared cultural traditions. When we arrived to photograph Amelia, and saw her sporting this stunning lace-satin dress, we knew we had to find an equally stunning backdrop to show it off.

By using creative shoot-through techniques and arches, we used our environment to create frames around this amazing bride. This highlighted Amelia’s dress in the image compositions, while drawing focus to her.

As is customary, the bride and groom began the day in separate locations, and waited until the ceremony to see each other.

Once she was ready to show off her final look, guests gathered at Amelia’s home for a special Chaldean ceremony. Amelia was escorted out, and was greeted with music and cheers.

Meanwhile, our groom Alvin was getting ready at a location nearby with his groomsmen.

With pocket aces hidden up his sleeve, our groom took home the gold. We love adding playful ideas like this fun set up shot of Alvin beating his buddies. Adding a bit of humor throughout the day helps to keep things light-hearted, and adds laughter to the wedding gallery.

Amelia and Alvin chose to exchange vows at their local church, St. Peter Chaldean Church in El Cajon.

Following the ceremony, Amelia and Alvin invited guests to the alluring Fairmont Grand Del Mar for a ballroom reception. Just before the couple’s grand entrance, we walked the property together, and made good use of the diverse backdrops all around. The venue’s grand staircases and Mediterranean-inspired archways beautifully complimented the pair’s modern glamor.

We loved using Amelia’s long veil in a variety of fun ways (extending it out, shooting through it) to add a whimsical sense of awe and drama.

At the reception, Amelia and Alvin joined friends and family for a festive zeffa dance, which is a Chaldean wedding tradition. The zeffa dance invites everyone onto the dance floor, and encourages all to congratulate and dance with the bride and groom.

One of the best parts of working with Anna and David was getting to know their family and friends. Many of the attendees traveled long distances to be there, including Anna’s father and sister, who flew in from Russia! It was fun to be surrounded by such a lively and energetic group. With all the laughing and smiling, there was never a dull moment!
