Life Imitates Art | Photo of the Week

Here in San Diego, we are fortunate to have a selection of world-class museums within driving distance. Many of these museums also double as eclectic and distinctive wedding venues. For example, the Contemporary Museum of Art in La Jolla is a standout wedding location, with its abundance of artistic backgrounds, modern aesthetic, and edgy design. Whenever we photograph here, we like to incorporate the museum’s vibrance into the wedding day photos as much as possible.

In preparation for Vanessa and Len’s wedding, we discovered this unique, modern wall of the Museum tucked away in a corner of the reception. As you’ll see in the photo below, we framed the lines around our couple, and added a single backlight of flash for contrast. This added drama and intensity to a quiet and intimate moment, and resulted in our Photo of the Week :)

Mai and Dale | Darlington House Wedding

Mai and Dale were married at the illustrious Darlington House in La Jolla, California. This location, a San Diego Historic Landmark dating back to 1925, is a mash-up of sophisticated design characteristics from all over the world. For example, there is a Spanish-influenced library, an Egyptian/Andalusian patio, columns imported from Italy and Greece, and a Moroccan fireplace!

The multicultural theme of this venue was perfect for Mai and Dale, who celebrated a little bit of their own respective cultures throughout the wedding. To commemorate Mai’s Chinese family background, there was a traditional tea ceremony, and customary Chinese favors. To pay tribute to Dale’s Jewish heritage, a glass was broken during the ceremony, and guests danced the Hora during the reception. The wedding was super fun and had many unique elements and details as you will see below….we hope you enjoy!

To bring out the brilliance of these rings, we used a macro lens, and photographed them on a reflective surface.

In the above photo, we brought our camera really close to the rail to create leading lines, and to draw attention to the couple.

We LOVE color! We’re always on the look out for unique colorful backdrops to liven things up.

Looking at things from different perspectives leads to visually interesting photographs!

It’s fun getting guests involved for a large group group photo, and it makes an awesome keepsake for the couple!

As you can imagine, the Darlington House has a number of striking photo locations, both inside and out.

Just down the street, there is a beautiful stretch of beach, where we snuck this beautiful couple away for romantic sunset photos.

We understand how much effort goes into the preparation of a wedding, and photograph every intricate detail from a variety of vantage points.

By setting our exposure just right, we were able to bring out the vibrant colors of the sky, showing the true ambiance of the reception.

La Valencia | Classic Venue with a Modern Twist

La Valencia is a vintage Spanish-stye San Diego hotel overlooking La Jolla Cove. With a colorful history dating back to 1926, this old-school gem has color flourishes throughout, and stunning panoramic ocean views. The venue’s tropical garden is tranquil and breathtaking, and is an undeniably gorgeous place to exchange wedding vows.

As photographers, we love finding new, creative ways to put a fresh spin on this old-world venue.

We have our favorite spots also, such as the hotel’s vibrant pink exterior, gorgeous tiled walls, and hand-painted murals.

The surrounding La Jolla neighborhood is a treasure trove of photo opportunities. There are colorful buildings, city backdrops, and the famous La Jolla Cove, all within a four minute walk.

After the ceremony, the nearby beach is an inviting place for couples to relax, have a quick photo session, and refresh before rejoining friends and family. The vivid hues, natural surroundings, and soft light create a sense of timeless intimacy, resulting in beautiful portraits. It is an amazing way to spend the first few moments as a newly married couple :)

As the day crosses over into evening, it’s time to celebrate at La Valencia’s Verandah Ballroom and Terrace. Sitting high above the property, this room provides magnificent views, and is furnished with crystal chandeliers and stylish checkered floors. This elegant setting is perfect for a dramatic grand entrance, and will enchant guests as they party the night away.
