Dressed to Impress | Groomsmen Getting Ready

By, March 15, 2016

We love witnessing the bromance between the groom and his buddies on the wedding day. While the bride is squared away with her ladies, our second shooters typically head over to the groom and his fellas. By having two photographers on the wedding day, our crew is able to divide and conquer, and capture the early moments of the day from both perspectives. The guys often create hilarious and unpredictable moments, leading to unforgettable images to enjoy for years to come.

When we first arrive, the groom and his buddies are usually getting dressed to impress. Once they are prepped and ready, there may be time to kick back, talk smack, or play a competitive game of pool with a beer (or two) to celebrate. We enjoy finding creative ways for the guys to let loose and show off their personalities.

For a stylish collection of dapper dudes preparing to tie the knot, check out some of our favorite pre-ceremony moments.

Groomsmen fix ties in front of mirror

With so many groomsmen and only one mirror (above), we had to get a little creative. After spotting this awesome multi-paned mirror in the lobby, we made sure there was enough prep room for all the guys at Vanessa and Justin’s wedding.

We love when grooms pick fun, vibrant details to match their personalities. When we noticed Anton getting a bowtie assist from one of his buddies on his wedding day (see above), we couldn’t resist capturing a photo in hopes of learning a trick or two ourselves.

Sometimes, couples exchange a special pre-ceremony gift, such as during Begum and Michael’s wedding (left) or Katie and John’s (right). We like to capture intimate moments like this, where we can grab the Groom’s reaction as he reveals what’s inside.

While Steven and his groomsmen shared a few rounds of jokes, we captured this genuine reaction from the groom, whose laughter couldn’t be contained. By staying alert and focused, we were able to jump on this fleeting moment before it passed.

Between funky colored socks, dapper-looking bowties or fancy watches, the groom’s details can be just as colorful and entertaining as the bride’s.

Daniel and his buddies are avid skateboarders, and after spying a stack of decks in the corner, we were determined to put them to good use. The group was more than willing to entertain us with some sweet tricks. By letting groomsmen show off their inner daredevils, we were able to document a fun and spontaneous moment.

Hot (and Cool) Wedding Colors | Pantone’s 2016 Colors of the Year

By, January 12, 2016

Pantone 2016 Color of the YearAlong with the New Year comes the announcement of Pantone’s Color of the Year! For 2016, Pantone broke from tradition for the first time in history, and made not one but two selections: Rose Quartz and Serenity. These colors combine aspects of warm and cool tones, creating a perfect sense of fresh balance and calm. We decided to show how Pantone’s winners can add to the wedding day fun, and create new possibilities this wedding season.

As you will see in the photos below, both Rose Quartz and Serenity make for dynamic and memorable wedding accent colors. The subtle, muted blues of Serenity are cool and tranquil, while Rose Quartz complements with its punch of pink vibrance. When paired together, the romantic, sunset effect will leave your guests enchanted. Both colors are great any time of year, and can be augmented by a variety of greens and purples, or splashes of silver and yellow. In addition, these hues can be found in the natural environment, creating a dramatic and artistic backdrop for wedding day images.

If you’re looking to add an elegant twist to your big day, we’ve gathered the perfect inspiration for incorporating these trending colors. Scroll through the images below highlighting Rose Quartz and Serenity, and make sure to pin your favorites :)

Alfie Design Creates Custom Watercolor Invitations for Ultimate Skybox Wedding

By, July 02, 2012

An invitation is an extension of the wedding decor – it sets the tone for the celebration, and gives guests a quick preview of what the day will entail. At Alfie Design, I specialize in custom watercolor wedding invitations. Every invitation suite that I create is customized to the couple, and to the overall feel of their big day! Whether the wedding theme is vintage chic, backyard barbecue, traditional, or old Hollywood glam, the opportunities are endless when using a medium like watercolor.

I recently had the opportunity to work with a beautiful couple, Kate and Matt.  Their wedding was a combination of classic and contemporary. The ceremony was held at Our Lady of the Rosary, followed by an urban reception at the Ultimate Skybox in the Gaslamp.

When we first discussed the invitations, they envisioned a clean modern feel with a light and intricate design. I used a fine art, soft cotton paper for the invites to provide a sturdy and high quality look.

The wedding color scheme consisted of shades of coral, grey and white. These cool shades worked nicely with the church’s classic appeal. The same colors also paired nicely with the reception venue’s contemporary floor-to-ceiling windows, overlooking downtown San Diego.

We decided to keep the suite simple and modern by producing the pieces without mattes, which allowed for double sided cards. This approach is also more cost effective and eco-friendly!  In addition to the announcement, we created a customized map, and an RSVP postcard in shades of shades of coral and white. We then paired the whole suite with a slate-colored envelope!

I always like to make a my invitation suites a complete package by adding a final accent. Whether it’s twine, a band, or a pocket fold with a wax seal, I enjoy finishing with a distinctive touch. For this invite, we used a pale peach twine, which complemented the clean and understated feel of the wedding.  For each suite, I used just over a yard of twine! Once the twine was hand-wrapped around the stack of cards three times, the package was tied together with a knot.

To further enhance the theme, we created simple escort cards with the coral tone watercolor wash. Also, we made table numbers using the floral design from the invitations. Everything at the wedding paired together beautifully!

Other designs, such as the program and menu shown here, shared the same intricate floral pieces and watercolor wash used in the invitations.

Kate and Matt were so great to work with!  Their personalities were bubbly, easy going and playful – just like their signature “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” cocktails!  To highlight the drink of the night, I created a sign featuring a watercolor-painted champagne glass!
