Rainy Wedding Day Photos

Although we can’t control the weather, we have learned to treat everything like an opportunity. Even when the forecast shifts in an unexpected direction, we choose to seize the day, whatever it may bring. If it does rain while we are photographing, we will take it and make sweet batch of lemonade :)

Especially on the wedding day, there’s something thrilling about running headfirst into the rain, and capturing the beauty of nature in unexpected ways. Once you see the potential a rainy day holds, you just might find yourself hoping for raindrops!

Kristin and Ryan possess a stunning image that few other couples have. This photograph was taken in Colorado at 5,500 elevation. Being that both our camera Kristin and Ryan's umbrella were both metal, it wasn't our brightest idea. But since we all survived, it sure made for an amazing picture. We photographed 100 frames in about 20 seconds to precisely capture this bolt of lightning.

Yang and Kaisu had shifting weather patterns on their big day, and took every photo op in stride. This resulted in a breathtaking collection of photos, like this candid shot. The beautiful, floral framing alone would have made a nice image, but the rain falling in the background really kicked it up a few notches :)

Jenn and Nick's' wedding started off with bright, golden rays of sun during their day at the Coronado Cays Yacht Club. However, an unexpected blanket of fog quickly set in. Working within these conditions, we backlit Jenn and Nick, and captured the ambience of the moment.

Understanding the Light

On the wedding day, even with the most careful of planning, the lighting and weather can still be unpredictable. So how do you prepare for something you can’t plan for? When selecting a photographer to capture your wedding day, part of what you are paying for is someone who knows how to get the most out of any lighting situation. With years of experience comes preparation, and the ability to get creative, even in most challenging of lighting scenarios. Here are some examples of difficult lighting conditions we’ve faced, and the results we pulled off :)

When Katelynn and Douglas tied the knot at Bali Hai, the sun was in full force. Our photographers strategically placed them so that the sun was behind them, avoiding unflattering shadows and lighting patterns while maintaining theu00a0fun setting of environmentu00a0in the photo.

After Tracy and Nathan's ceremony, they enjoyed a romantic, post sunset portrait session in Seaport Village.u00a0 u00a0At this time, natural light was certainly scarce but this didn't stop their True Photographers from capturing the romance. Balancing the ambient light and back-lighting to create separation from the background created a more edgy photograph.

One of the darkest situations that can occur is a night reception outdoors. Market lighting is a fun and practical detail that creates a great ambianceu00a0in person, however, it takes know how to capture u00a0it to it's fullest potential on camera. Marguerite and Julian will be able to reflect on the romantic ambiance at Mt. Woodson because of utilizing proper exposure and aperture technique. If this was photographed with artificial flashes, the entire feeling from that night would be lost.

A True photographer would never allow rain to put a damper on a couples special day. Embracing those raindrops for a unique photo opportunity is what we are here for. Rather than running for shelter,u00a0u00a0Natalie and Joelu00a0(below) continued their funu00a0downtownu00a0and Vanessau00a0and Davidu00a0(above right) boldly shared a moment under the market lights of Scrippsu00a0creating memorable experiences they will never forget.

Bring it on, El Niño!

If you’ve been anywhere near San Diego these last few weeks, chances are you’ve felt the wrath El Niño has had on our sunny shores. But a little rain never stopped us before :) By booking talented photographers who know their craft, and how to handle the elements, you’ll see how rain can easily be turned into a dynamic and creative photo opportunity.

Here are a few fun ways to embrace the rain, and to show the weather who is boss.

1. Jump Into It

We add drama and emotion to your photos by taking control of the weather, and by using light in creative ways. As the clouds draw in, and the sprinkles come down, we’re ready use the rain to your advantage.

2. Reflections

Another innovative way to add edge to your wedding memories is to transform an ordinary puddle into a sea of reflection. This technique adds a cool, modern twist to your images.

3. Rainy Day Props

When facing stormy weather, don’t forget to include some fun! Rainy day props such as umbrellas or rainbows introduce a splash of color and youthful energy into your images.

4. Capture the Clouds

When skies turn gray, and clouds begin to roll in, don’t forget to look up! The muted blues of the sky add drama and intensity to the scene, which turns the landscape from dull to epic.

A true classic (above). During a lightning storm, we photographed a couple hanging on to a metal umbrella, while holding a metal camera at 5,500 feet elevation. Was this the smartest idea? Probably not… But if it was going to be the last photo we ever took, we made sure to make it amazing! No, this isn’t a Photoshopped lighting bolt, as many often think ;)
