Urban weddings make the most of a part of the city you may not see everyday - downtown! Unless you live or work in the downtown vicinity, chances are you only visit the area on special occasions. An urban wedding is one such occasion, for sure. It is also reminiscent of past generations, where people dressed up in their finest clothing for a night out on the town. You can create such an occasion for your guests. Your urban wedding will give them an excuse to not only get all dolled up, but also to explore a part of downtown they may not be as familiar with. Fortunately, there are many swanky hotels and wedding venues in Downtown San Diego that will help you pull off a beautiful Urban Wedding.
What Makes Urban Weddings Special?
Here in town, urban weddings are special because they put you in the heart of San Diego. Once surrounded by historic buildings and skyscrapers, you are surrounded by the bustle and elegance of city life. Having a downtown urban wedding feels like a happening, like a once-in-a-lifetime event. You can walk outside your venue in your wedding attire, and stop and be noticed by tourists and onlookers. Or, you can send a limo out for your close family or wedding party, and let them arrive in style. When you take the elevator up to your beautifully decorated wedding venue, you will feel the excitement in the air.
Outside The Urban Wedding Venue
When we photograph an urban wedding, we like to document the activity outside the wedding venue, as well as in. Prior to the wedding, if time allows, we may take a walk around the block with the wedding party. This gives us the opportunity to be creative, with interesting and unexpected photos. For example, we may find an alleyway that has dramatic lighting. Or industrial pipes that provide a strong contrast to the formal attire or the wedding party. Or there may even be a graffiti wall where the entire wedding party can pose and make their toughest faces. Even though we scout beforehand, you never know exactly what you will find outside an urban wedding venue. We like to take full advantage!
Inside The Venue
Once inside, we take care to capture all the small details that give the venue its flair and charm. Many of the urban wedding venues in Downtown San Diego are decades old, and have gorgeous antique or replica furnishings and decorations. These provide wonderful settings when photographing the wedding couple. Some of these backdrops are very distinctive and are completely unique to a specific venue. Even if we've photographed a location numerous times, we still work to capture it in new and interesting ways. For example, we may have the bridesmaids peek out from behind a regal oversized curtain. Or, we may ask the groom to sit atop a pool table, surrounded by his groomsmen. Each time we photograph an urban wedding venue, we try to see it with fresh eyes, so the resulting photos stand out.
Bringing Urban Weddings To Life
Once you have the perfect venue, it is the other aspects of the wedding that will bring your wedding to life. If you are hosting a nighttime event, you may want to make this black tie or black tie optional. It's a bit on the formal side, but it will make your photos look amazing. For a lively evening, consider a DJ who can capture the excitement of the nightlife and the city location. If you have a live band, consider one with a horn section, which will bring both a classic feel and a high energy atmosphere.
When deciding on your event theme, think about incorporating shimmering metallics. Gold, silver, and platinum will look phenomenal, especially when set against a view of the San Diego city skyline. For dinner, you may want to serve traditional entrees such as steak and lobster, for an old-fashioned supper club vibe. Pair this with a wait staff wearing bow ties, and your urban wedding style will be complete.
As you can see, there are no shortage of options when it comes to creating your urban wedding. If you want assistance in executing your event, a wedding planner or coordinator will be the way to go. They will help you envision your theme, with ideas of how to best execute it in your urban wedding venue.
New Wedding Venues
Not all San Diego urban venues are a century old. In fact, many of them are brand new! These venues have been cropping up in mixed use or reclaimed buildings, making the most of the available space. If you are adventurous and non-traditional, you may enjoy seeking out one of the newer and more contemporary venues. If you want a wedding with a timeless feel, then one of the enduring and beloved older venues will be the best choice for you.
