As mentioned, a winery makes you feel like you are someplace special, even if you are only minutes from home. It may seem like you are transported to a destination like Napa Valley. Or, somewhere even more exotic like Tuscany. This is sure to please your guests, especially out of town friends are relatives traveling specifically for the occasion. They will not only enjoy your wedding, but they will have a vacation in the process!

Wineries tend to be fairly large properties, which is beneficial throughout the wedding day. For example, there will likely be completely separate areas for each side of the wedding party to get ready. These may be roomy suites, or even entire buildings. This means you will have a private and exclusive section of the venue all to yourself. Even if there are areas open to the public, such as tasting rooms, they are typically kept separate from the wedding venue itself. Also, wineries are often rustic, with country charm. This will provide a nice, romantic atmosphere for your wedding day.

Things To Know About Venues For Winery Weddings

We've talked about some of the benefits of winery wedding venues. Now, here are a few things to keep in mind. First, some wineries have a full service option, which includes catering, event rentals, and other services for the event. If your winery of choice doesn't offer this, you may need to raise your budget. This is to account for the fact that you'll be bringing in all outside vendors. It may not make a huge difference, budget-wise, but it could have an impact. Some wineries may even restrict or prohibit outside vendors for certain categories. So, this is something you'll want to ask about early on in the process.

Second, most winery wedding venues are outdoors. In case of bad weather, you will want to have a backup plan. This could include a secondary area on the property, or possibly even a large tent. If your venue doesn't provide a tent, there are party rental companies that do, even for huge wedding receptions. If done correctly, with attention to detail, a tented wedding can be quite beautiful. Just make sure you are alright with this backup option, even if it doesn't match your initial vision. And, be sure to have a weather contingent plan in place!

Third, some wineries may have a license for wine and beer only. This isn't a huge deal, because chances are your guests will care most about the wine! But if having a full bar is important to you, then you'll want to know beforehand what the options and limitations are. Otherwise, you may be disappointed at the last minute, finding out that you can't serve signature cocktails or mixed drinks.

Typically, we take our wedding couples on a walk before the ceremony, or during the cocktail hour. Together, we visit the fun landmarks that we as photographers explored earlier, during our pre-shoot location scouting. These landmarks could include textured wood walls, cool vintage tractors, bales of hay, for example. We are always watching for visually interesting details to include in the wedding photos. Even with our diligent pre-shoot process, we still save room during the photo shoot itself for creativity in the moment. This results in spontaneous candids, photographed around the winery, as well as more planned out wedding photos.
