Welcome to the childhood photography portion of our website. Kids grow so fast! We photograph your child outdoors at play at a beach, park, or other natural setting. Or, if you prefer, we will set up a shoot in our studio. The resulting images can be used for holiday cards, birthdays, back-to-school photos and much more.
Why Childhood Photography Is Important
Have you ever looked back on a picture of your child and realized how young they were, compared to now? Ever think back wistfully to the days of loose teeth, before they cared about their appearance? Or maybe you are in this stage right now. Regardless of the age of your child or children, a photo session centered around them is a unique and wonderful experience. You will watch their eyes light up as they get to be the star, and the center of attention. Who doesn't want that?
Preserving Family Memories
Years from now, you will be able to look back on the childhood photo session and recall precise memories of the day. What the weather was like, or the anticipation on the drive over. A portrait session with your child turns an ordinary day into one that is special. It becomes part of your family history. Paired with an expert childhood photographer, the session will result in personalized and amazing images that help tell the story of the day. It will capture precise moments in time, letting you revisit the memories for years to come.
Preparing For Your Childhood Photography Session
Chances are, your child will be very excited to know that they will be starring in their very own photo session. This is great! We love capturing energy and enthusiasm. It makes for fun and visually engaging action shots of your child at play. Here are a few tips to help you prepare:
Make sure your child is well rested, with plenty of sleep the night before the photo shoot
It's a good idea to have your child eat shortly before the session. That way, they aren't hungry mid-shoot. If we need to stop for lunch, this will be part of the photography time. We'd rather spend the time behind the camera! We recommend keeping an extra snack or two on hand, just in case.
Bring an extra change of clothes (or two) that you don't mind getting a bit dirty. If the mood strikes and your child wants to roll in the grass, we will run with it! Or we may suggest something active like splashing in a fountain or eating a giant ice cream for a classic photo that will stand out. We always suggest extra clothes just in case!
If there are specific goals or objectives for your childhood photo shoot, let us know ahead of time. This way, we can think creatively in a specific direction, or have plans mapped out before the shoot. You will find that the time is better spent preparing beforehand, rather than introducing new ideas or objectives during the photo shoot itself.
Dressing For The Childhood Photo Shoot
Should your child wear their Sunday best? Yes. Should they wear ripped jeans and an old camp t-shirt? Absolutely. As much as we (as parents) may want to primp our kids and have them be photo perfect, we say to let their natural style win out. If they are all comfort, all the time, they may feel out of place in a starched shirt and penny loafers. If their hair is wild and crazy, they may run screaming when they see the brush headed their way :)
Here is our take. If your child is extremely uncomfortable during the shoot because of what they are wearing, they will likely be miserable. This can not only impact the photos, but it could potentially take time away from the shoot. For example, if you find it necessary to stop until your kiddo cheers up and is ready to participate, this will be time better spent photographing. However, if your child loves dressing up and wants to look their best, this is the perfect occasion to do so.
One idea is to compromise with your child before the photo shoot, so there is a game plan going in. For example, if she wears the dress from Grandma with the matching bow, the second half of the shoot she can rock her favorite mermaid pajamas. This should ideally be worked out beforehand so the two of you have an understanding, and we can jump right in and start photographing. Win win!
